Singapore honours Klaus Ziegler
The Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore) Award was conferred on Klaus Ziegler, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of EPCOS AG. Ziegler received the award from Sellapan Rama Nathan, President of Singapore on November 25, 2005.
The Public Service Star, which was inaugurated by the Economic Development Board, is awarded to distinguished international investors who have contributed significantly to Singapore's development in industry, technology and science. The award recognized Klaus Ziegler, who was EPCOS' CEO until 2001, for his instrumental role over nearly two decades in promoting Singapore's economic well-being and technological progress.
"I feel very honoured to have been conferred this prestigious award", said Ziegler. "It not only gives enormous satisfaction to me personally, but also pays tribute to all our employees in Singapore and worldwide. Their achievements and the support of the Economic Development Board have helped make EPCOS a global leader in passive electronic components."
Successful relationship
Over the past 40 years, Singapore's remarkable transformation from a sleepy colony into a thriving centre of international trade, industry and services has set the pace of development for the rest of Southeast Asia. Its strategic location in the centre of Asia, political stability, an economic environment favourable to investment, and an excellent infrastructure plus the use of English as the official language have made this island republic an ideal base for doing business in Southeast Asia.
The company's activities in Singapore can be traced back to when EPCOS was still a part of Siemens. Singapore rapidly established itself as the hub of regional marketing activities for passive electronic components and grew into a centre of competence for the ASEAN countries, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea. In 1995 - a time when the consumer electronics industry began to concentrate itself in Southeast Asia - a design centre for components was set up in Singapore under Ziegler's leadership. This meant that surface acoustic wave filters for multimedia applications could be co-developed directly with local customers - both Asian firms and the manufacturing subsidiaries of multinationals. Three years later, EPCOS opened a state-of-the-art facility in Singapore to manufacture SAW filters for mobile phones. In 2005, this location took over global responsibility for the whole of EPCOS' multimedia filter business - not only for manufacturing all product business unit. Indeed, as lines, but also for product design, marketing and management of the entire P.T. Liao, President and CEO of EPCOS PTE LTD asserts, "we are now an even higher value-creating operation positioned as a high-tech facility and global business centre within the EPCOS Group."
Today, 700 employees of EPCOS in Singapore SAW filters account for 50% of sales of the Surface Acoustic Wave Components Division.
